Significance: These two items are closely associated with the rulers of Egypt. It is thought that the Crook and the Flail represent the functions of a ruler. The Crook represents a shepherd, who cares for people, and the Flail represents the punishments that must be used to keep society in place. Once the ruler has obtained his Crook and Flail, it is said that he never gave it to anyone else. It even stays with him in the afterlife.
The Crook and the Flail are also said to be carried not only by Pharoahs, but by the Gods as well. The god most known for this was Osiris, the god of the dead and afterlife.
The Crook and the Flail were found in Late Period mummies. It is unknown why they were buried with commoners, but it is said it could be to do with strengthening the chance of eternal afterlife. Ushabtis that were buried with commoners during the Third Intermediate Period occassionally held a Crook and a Flail.
